The Alexander Technique - A brief history

The Alexander Technique is a method of body awareness and movement re-education that has gained worldwide recognition for its effectiveness in improving posture, movement coordination, and overall well-being. Developed by F. F. Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) was born in Tasmania, Australia. As an aspiring actor, he encountered difficulties with vocal hoarseness and respiratory issues during his performances. Determined to find a solution, he embarked on a journey of self-observation and experimentation, closely examining his own habits and coordination in relation to his vocal difficulties.

Through careful observation, Alexander noticed that his own habits of movement and posture were contributing to his vocal problems. He discovered that certain unconscious patterns of tension and misalignment interfered with the optimal functioning of his body. Inspired by his findings, he developed a unique method to re-educate himself and improve his overall coordination and vocal performance.

Alexander's discoveries did not go unnoticed, and his colleagues and friends began seeking his assistance. Word spread, and he soon found himself teaching his technique to others. In the early 20th century, he moved to London and established a thriving teaching practice. Alexander refined his approach, integrating principles of body awareness, conscious control, and inhibition into a comprehensive system for improving movement coordination and overall well-being.
